Inequality, Health and Education

Assignment #1: Inequality.

Read the following article about inequality in South Africa. Then, answer the following:

A. What divides the rich from the poor in South Africa?
B. When did South Africa's segregation (Apartheid) system end?
C. What are some examples of evidence that South Africa has been developing?
D. What are some examples of evidence that South Africa is still an undeveloped country?
E. How do you think South Africa's inequality contributes to its lack of development?

In your notes, fill out the last three boxes for #5. Let me know if you need help.

Assignment #2: Health and Education

First, read the the FIRST PAGE of the UNESCO Report on education and development. Then, go to Page 3 of this report.

A. The first article was put out by UNESCO. What is UNESCO?
B. Based on the first reading, what is the relationship between education and growth/development?
C. Provide one piece of evidence from the second reading that health impacts development.
D. Based on the second reading, what is the relationship between health and growth/development?
E. Why is health and education an important issue for economic development?


In your notes, fill out the #6 Health and Education. For terms, simply define literacy (the ability to read and write). Skip identifying a key country.

 If you have finished the packet, do the extra credit assignment:


Extra Credit Assignment

Read The Economist article entitled"For Richer, for Poorer," you can stop at the History section on page 4.

Write a paragraph in which you explain what the article says about the relationship between economic development and inequality, what are the recent trends in regard to inequality in the world today, and if inequality is a problem at all.

Then, create a document with name: Period 6, Your Name, Your Country

In that document, record the values for your country and then do the same for the United States as a comparison: Use this document as a template or use Google Classroom.

Assignment Due Friday 12/12

Part 1: Commentary Article and outline
-Either using a new Macro current event article or the one you submitted two weeks ago, complete and send an outline to Mrdasilvasjha@gmail.com in which you:

A. Summarize the article (just to make sure you've read and understand it)
B. List terms or concepts from the class that could be applied to the article.
C. List diagrams that could be applied to the article.
D. Describe a portion of the article that you could evaluate (costs vs. benefits, winners vs. losers, long-term vs. short-term, validity of theory). 


Part 2:  Taxes

A.Read this article. Based on the article, do you think Americas are overtaxed compared to other countries? Which countries have highest the tax rates? Which countries have the lowest tax rates?

B. What are 5 conclusions or interpretations that can be made from the graph to the right/below?



C. Read this "article." Based on the article what are at least 4 things that the very wealthy do to pay a lower tax rate? What do you think should be done about this?

D. What are some reasons to tax the rich more than the poor? What are some reasons not to tax the rich more than the poor?

Step 1: Describe the problem (Explain what causes recessions and the effect they have on the economy and employment).


Step 2: Outline the Keynesian solution with a diagram (Demand-side policies)

Step 3: Outline some Supply-side policies with a diagram (Neo-classical).

Step 4: Explain which you think Obama should use and why. Include a discussion of how your plan will deal with unemployment and inflation
